Show Spoiler

The members of the Torchwood Institute, a secret organization founded by the British Crown, fight to protect the Earth from extraterrestrial and supernatural threats.
Captain Jack Harkness, the former Time Agent and con man from the 51st century last seen traveling with the Doctor, ventures to early 21st century Cardiff. There, he becomes a member of Torchwood Institute, a renegade criminal investigation group founded by Queen Victoria to battle hostile extraterrestrial and supernatural threats.
There,s no doubt that the biggest television success story of the last few years has been the resurrection of DOCTOR WHO which has captured the imagination of a whole new generation of fans , children everywhere are looking forward to Christmas because that's the day when the BBC broadcast a Christmas special and should the new version degenerate into the debacle that it was in the 1980s so what ? There's children already converted into die hard fans who will one day be working in television and like Russell T Davies will be in a position to bring back the show . In short the revamped DOCTOR WHO shows that the show is immortal and will certainly out live everyone who saw the very first episode on November the 23rd 1963

So when RTD said he was going to do a spin off show " That is both adult and intelligent " I was rubbing my hands in glee . RTD assured the world that this was definitely not for kids and was a programme that deserved to be shown after the watershed . " Great " I thought " We'll be seeing a British version of The X Files , or maybe Doomwatch crossed with Cracker " and I wasn't the only person looking forward to it as the BBC bombarded the public with the type of hype not seen since the BBC brought back DOCTOR WHO in March 2005 . So unlike the viewers who had BBC digital who saw the first two episodes on BBC Three I had to wait a couple of days later when the show was broadcast on BBC Two and I was disappointed with what I saw but the season opener for the new series of DOCTOR WHO was poor so I gave TORCHWOOD a chance . After seeing a couple more episodes I will go on record as saying TORCHWOOD is the biggest insult served up to the British television public

RTD said they'd be no cross over between the two shows which shows him to be economical with the truth . One episode featured a partially converted cyberwoman that tied in with the finale of DOCTOR WHO season two and in interviews with John Barrowmen it's heavily insinuated that the final episode of TORCHWOOD ( Which I probably won't be watching so dire is it as entertainment ) ties in with the next series of DOCTOR WHO . I take it David Tennant will be making a cameo perhaps ? Oh and let's not forget much of series two of DOCTOR WHO revolved around the setting up of the Torchwood organisation . No cross over Rusell ? You could have fooled me

And as the series goes on and on it becomes more clearer that most of the episodes are based on rejected DOCTOR WHO scripts with Captain Jack Harkness playing the ninth Doctor and WPC Gwen playing the role of Rose Tyler . Indeed the whole show feels like an entirely under developed DOCTOR WHO episode with " adult " scenes shoehorned into the half baked narrative. For instance two of the characters in the cyberwoman episode start snogging simply so that one of them can make a comment about her colleague getting an erection a couple of minutes later . It's totally bizarre because you watch this programme and it never feels like anything more than a children's show then we're treated to a meaningless sex scene or the F word which totally jars with the feel of a show that features alien technology used as a plot device to get the heroes out of a tight spot ( A sort of HARDY BOYS with lazers ) or of a cyberwoman fighting a pterydactyl

And make no mistake TORCHWOOD is a children's television programme but because there's a couple of swear words or a sex scene this means no eight year old with responsible parents will get to see it which must must break their hearts because it'd be impossible for them to ignore that Captain Jack from the first series of DOCTOR WHO is getting his own show , a show Mummy and Daddy won't let them see . I'm actually angry about this because an eight year old fan of DOCTOR WHO would love TORCHWOOD and I doubt if anyone over the age of twenty with little like of the source programme could find anything to enjoy about this show which insults the intelligence of adult viewers . You,ve broken the hearts of the very young fans RTD . Are you proud of that ?

In my review of CASANOVA I said that Russell T Davies was an extremely overrated writer but I would have given him his due as a producer after seeing the second series of DOCTOR WHO which showed the flexibility of the format . One week we saw a terrific horror story featuring the devil on an alien planet followed a week later by a brilliant post modernist comedy that was certain to wind up the fans but after seeing TORCHWOOD I've come to the conclusion that that Rusell T Davies is no more talented than John Nathan Turner , the man who effectively destroyed the DOCTOR WHO franchise in the 1980s . Thankfully the cult of DOCTOR WHO will outlast the cult of Rusell T Davies
This is one of the few shows that I regret deeply being done with and even think about watching all over again. The lower rating is only due to series 4, which I struggled to get past. The two new characters that are introduced aren't Torchwood at all and I couldn't develop any feelings beyond annoyance towards them. While I wish the series would come back, I'm not sure if it would be as good as it used to be, with all that happened in the three previous seasons.

But let's talk about the real deal and just pretend Miracle Day doesn't exist: the first episodes aren't the best, but as the characters develop and you get to know more about the world around them, it becomes more and more interesting.

I, personally, find it better than Doctor Who for the simple reason that I see a deeper development in many points. While the Doctor is the only one who has very substantial changes in his personality (apart from some of his companions), each and every character has their own space to improve as time goes by in Torchwood. Ianto was my absolute favourite, because he starts as a coffee boy and develops into an essential member of the team, conquering his space and voicing his opinions. And he has some of the best lines.

I also see more diversity in the personalities (mainly in the women) of Torchwood's characters and I find it very interesting that Davies explored matters that aren't explored in Doctor Who, such as homosexuality. It is amazing how there are two women kissing or two men in a relationship and everyone there just treats it as natural - and eventually finds it rather sexy. It's just a "background" romance as any other, it comes in various types and it doesn't necessarily enforce or contradict any stereotypes - considering Queer As Folk, you can see a huge development in Davies' way of expressing the matter.

The plot is rather different from Doctor Who; it's set on Earth, and it's not only about saving the day, it's preventing humanity from knowing of the existence of alien dangers while they save everyone. Torchwood is packed with action, but it also has drama, so that you watch it to see what's happening in the corporation and what's going on in the characters' lives.

It is very curious that the series showed how some types of work simply consume one's life, yet some people are still capable of coping and living healthily in the outside world. It also explores the dependency some have, and how work becomes more than merely a part of someone.

The most amazing part, in my opinion, is that Torchwood overcomes fiction, something I don't see Doctor Who doing. The latter shows aliens in situations we know could never be real, but the former manages to show how aliens could be influencing our everyday lives without us even knowing. While in Doctor Who there are spaceships in the sky of London that can only be explained as aliens, a Weevil appears and Torchwood convinces the world that it was just a criminal. It's manipulation "for the people's good".

It is hard to believe that Doctor Who is real, but it's not impossible to wonder if Torchwood is.

"Torchwood" is an anagram of Doctor Who. When Doctor Who was revived in 2005, fans wanted to know all they could about the episodes before they aired. In order to keep scripts and set photos from being leaked onto the internet, Russel T Davies created the anagram "Torchwood," to appear on the production notes and on sets and locations so that they would be overlooked by people trying to get a scoop on Doctor Who. Later, he decided that it would be a good name for a corporation and worked it into the second series. The Torchwood Institute finally made its appearance in the Doctor Who series 2 finale "Army Of Ghosts"/"Doomsday," though it had been mentioned throughout the second series (and in part 1 of the series 1 finale "Bad Wolf" by Anne Droid) Series 2, episode 2 of the revived Doctor Who (the episode "Tooth and Claw") depicts the founding of the Torchwood Institute by Queen Victoria in 1879, to 'defend against threats beyond imagination'. In Series 2, episode 2 of the revived Doctor Who (the episode "Tooth and Claw"), the Doctor visits the 1879 Scotland and saves Queen Victoria from a vicious alien. Faced with the fact that aliens could attack Earth at any time, the Queen founds the Torchwood Institute for alien research in the house where the attack took place - the Torchwood Estate. Fearing that the Doctor brings these threats with him in his travels, he was made the primary enemy of the Torchwood Institute. Torchwood Three - the primary location of the series - is located in Cardiff, Wales, as there is a rift in time and space running through the city. Aliens and generally nasty creatures are constantly being drawn to and sometimes thrown out of the rift, making its protection an important task for the Torchwood team. There are (or have been) at least four other Torchwood bases. Torchwood One was located at Canary Wharf in central London, but was destroyed in the Battle of Canary Wharf, as depicted in the Doctor Who series 2 finale "Army of Ghosts"/"Doomsday." Torchwood Two is located in Glasgow. Captain Jack Harkness has stated that Torchwood Four is missing (possibly meant to be a reference to Babylon 4's disappearance on the show Babylon 5), but will turn up eventually.

The radio play, "Torchwood: Golden Age" showed that there was also a Torchwood India which was officially shut down on 24th February, 1924. Shortly after the Ninth Doctor (Christopher Eccleston) regenerated into the Tenth (David Tennant), he lost his hand in a battle (depicted in the post-series 1 Christmas special "The Christmas Invasion"). He was able to grow the hand back due to leftover regenerative energy, but the old one was taken by Jack, who used the hand to determine when an iteration of the Doctor that he would know arrived. When the Doctor is around, the hand starts to glow, as demonstrated in in the Torchwood series 1 finale "End of Days". Diane was featured in the Torchwood series 1 episode "Out of Time". She flew her plane - along with two passengers - through a rift in time, from 1953 to 2006. While being taken care of by the Torchwood team, she and Owen started a relationship. In the end she chose to try and fly home again, leaving an emotionally wrecked Owen behind. Diane returned as a ghost in the series 1 finale "End of Days," when she tried to make Owen open up the rift, saying it would reunite them. The character of Jack Harkness is originally introduced and demonstrated to be bisexual (sometimes referred to as omnisexual) he will engage in romance and sexual intercourse with any willing and attractive partner of age whether male or female, human or alien. It has said that it has not being cancelled yet they're still thinking of what to do and Russell T Davies is doing another TV show [new children's TV show] Wizards vs Aliens. When he has time he's going to work on Torchwood, but there most likely be more seasons to come. They finished season 4 on a cliffhanger so there has to be another season. And this is what John Barrowman said: "We've pushed the pause button now because we don't know what's happening. It's beyond my control." So let's be patient.
